The Swamp is a swamp near New Orleans, Louisiana. It served as the residence of Arlo Beauregard for the first fifteen years of his life before leaving for New York City.
Background[]
It is where Arlo Beauregard ended up after being abandoned on the sewers the night of his birth by his father, Ansel Beauregard, for the sake of not wanting him to expose his identity as a bird-man. His basket ended up on the porch of Edmée's swamp shack, where she takes a liking to him and rears him in as her own for fifteen whole years. As Arlo grew older, he was not allowed to leave the swamp nor snoop around the various riverboat tours, but Arlo didn't listen and was constantly curious. In addition, all the animals didn't take kindly to his alligator appearance and resented him in various ways; the only animal who liked him was Jeromio the bullfrog.
On Arlo's fifteenth birthday, he learns the truth about his life from the hospital bracelet Edmée saved from his birth. The following day, Edmée releases him from her care and lets him finally leave the swamp, allowing him to head to his true home in New York City and reunite with Ansel.
It is revealed in the Season 1 finale "The Uncondemning" that the swamp has a sinister goddess known as the Bog Lady. In addition to Edmée, she often saw Arlo in his childhood years and influenced him to the point he felt at home; when Arlo left, the Bog Lady became furious and cast a powerful spell on the swamp and manipulated Ruff and Stucky into getting Edmée captured. She then manipulates the two into luring Arlo back to the swamp with a ransom note and tried to tempt Arlo into staying with her forever, but Arlo resisted and admits even though the swamp isn't his real home, it will always be with him in his heart. Edmée then rigs her shack with a time bomb which explodes under the Bog Lady, destroying her forever and returning the swamp to normal.
